Philip author at work

Philip E.K. Symons was born in Victoria, B.C. He obtained a B.Sc. (’59) and M.Sc. (’61) from
the University of British Columbia, specializing in intertidal invertebrates, and a Ph.D. from the
University of Leiden, the Netherlands, (’65) in animal behaviour. Then, never having studied
fish or fisheries, he worked as a fisheries scientist in New Brunswick, coordinated multi-
disciplinary fisheries projects on Vancouver Island and in Spain, and ended his working career as
a consulting editor for the Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences. But his interest in
animal behaviour led him, in retirement, to social justice work and efforts to understand human
behaviour and survival.

Philip has two daughters from his first marriage, and four granddaughters. He now lives
with his second wife in Victoria, B.C.
